Cascadia Coastal Hazards RCN Public Seminar Series

Thursday, January 06, 09:00 AM to 10:00 AM PST

Glenn Rix (Geosyntec Consultants)- "The Future of the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program"

A virtual seminar of the Cascadia Coastal Hazards RCN, and co-sponsored by the CoPes HUB.  The seminar is open to the public.

Abstract: The Advisory Committee on Earthquake Hazards Reduction (ACEHR) advises the four federal agencies involved in the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program (NEHRP) — Federal Emergency Management Agency, National Institute of Standards and Technology, National Science Foundation, and U.S. Geological Survey. As required by the committee charter, ACEHR provides a biennial assessment of NEHRP to assess (i) trends and developments in the science and engineering of earthquake hazards reduction; (ii) the effectiveness of NEHRP; and (iii) the management, coordination, implementation, and activities of NEHRP.

ACEHR’s 2021 biennial assessment includes summaries of agency progress, additional needs related to functional recovery and community resilience, early earthquake warning research, and the basic earth science, engineering, and social science research needed to support NEHRP’s mission. The report also highlights four related topics and issues—learning from the COVID-19 pandemic, multi-hazard approaches, climate change, and data-driven models and new sensing technology—that have significant potential to yield lessons that could benefit earthquake risk-reduction efforts and improve community resilience. The seminar will provide a summary of ACHER’s 2021 report with a particular focus on emerging research topics identified by ACEHR.

Speaker: Glenn J. Rix is a Senior Principal Engineer with Geosyntec Consultants, Inc. and has more than 30 years of experience in geotechnical earthquake engineering, engineering seismology, and seismic hazard and risk assessment for civil infrastructure. Glenn joined Geosyntec in 2013 following a 24-year career on the faculty of the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Glenn has been a member of the Advisory Committee on Earthquake Hazards Reduction since 2016, and has been serving as Chairman of the committee since 2018.
